Flood in Godavari recedes

Water Resources Department withdraws the first flood warning at Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage in Dowleswaram as Godavari river water levels steadily recede.

Rajamahendravaram: The flood situation in the Godavari river showed further improvement on Monday evening with the Water Resources Department withdrawing the first flood warning at the Sir Arthur Cotton Barrage at Dowleswaram following a steady fall in the river level.

According to an official alert issued by the department, the flood level touched 11.70 feet, or 3.56 metres above the crest of the barrage, at 5.13 pm. In view of the receding flood, the first warning was withdrawn, and all flood duty officers were informed accordingly.

The department also stated that the forecast indicated a further decline in the river level over the next few hours.

Official readings recorded at 6 pm showed the gauge level at 11.50 feet and the pond level at 14.17 metres. The barrage was releasing a surplus flow of 9,73,593 cusecs downstream, while 11,100 cusecs of water was being drawn into the Delta Canal system.

By 7 pm, the gauge level remained unchanged at 11.50 feet and the pond level continued at 14.17 metres. However, the surplus discharge came down further to 9,55,039 cusecs, indicating a gradual reduction in flood inflows from the upstream reaches.
