Organic vegetables highlight ‘Happy Sunday’ in Vijayawada

Vijayawada: A unique “Farmer to Consumer” programme promoting organic food and healthy living was organised as part of the ‘Happy Sunday’ initiative at the Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation (IGMC) Stadium here on Sunday.
The event was conducted under the aegis of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation in association with One Earth–One LIFE, to provide chemical-free vegetables directly from farmers to consumers. The event received a positive response from the public, with many residents purchasing organic vegetables brought by farmers. The initiative seeks to eliminate middlemen, ensuring fair prices for farmers while offering fresh, high-quality and healthy produce to urban residents. Organisers said the programme also aims to create awareness about the health risks associated with chemically grown food and the benefits of consuming organic produce.
In view of rising health concerns, the event highlighted the importance of natural farming and the concept of “food as medicine,” encouraging people to adopt healthier dietary habits. The programme also focused on supporting small and marginal farmers by providing them direct market access, thereby improving their livelihoods.
Another key objective was to promote terrace gardening among city residents. Organisers encouraged households to grow their own vegetables in small spaces, helping families stay healthy while reconnecting with nature.
Speaking on the occasion, group admin Leela Kumari stressed the importance of chemical-free food and urged families to adopt terrace gardening practices. She said supporting farmers directly would help build a healthier society. Several organisers and farmers participated in the programme.
