Polavaram hydro project to boost AP’s energy security

Polavaram: The Polavaram Hydro Electric Project, one of the most ambitious power initiatives in the country, is set for full completion by January 2028, with the first three generating units scheduled to be commissioned by July 2027, coinciding with the auspicious Godavari Pushkaralu. With an installed capacity of 960 MW, the project comprises 12 generating units of 80 MW each and is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening Andhra Pradesh’s energy security. Once operational, it will significantly enhance the State’s ability to meet growing power demand with clean and sustainable hydroelectric energy. Officials said the project is progressing in fast-track mode, with nearly 2,900 personnel, including engineers, officers and field staff, working round the clock to meet the timelines.
Both civil construction and electro-mechanical works are advancing simultaneously to ensure timely completion of key milestones.
A major highlight of the project is the installation of advanced vertical Kaplan turbines, designed to handle high water discharge and operate efficiently under varying flow conditions. Each unit is engineered to run at a discharge of 331 cubic metres per second and a speed of 100 revolutions per minute, making them among the largest in the country.
The project is strategically designed to harness abundant monsoon inflows and to regulate releases to the Godavari delta for irrigation. This dual benefit will help generate reliable power while supporting agricultural needs, particularly during peak demand periods.
Upon completion, the project will generate 960 MW of clean hydro power, contributing approximately 23 million units (MU) of electricity daily at peak, using approximately 12 TMC of water per day. Annually, the station is expected to produce nearly 2,500 MU of electricity.
Economically, the project is expected to deliver major benefits, with a levelised tariff estimated at Rs 4.57 per unit and an annual financial advantage exceeding Rs 1,100 crore. This will reduce reliance on expensive power purchases and help stabilise tariffs for consumers.
The project involves leading organisations in the sector, with Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) supplying turbines and generators, Siemens Energy providing advanced substation systems, and Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Limited (MEIL) executing the works.
With steady progress and coordinated execution, officials expressed confidence that the Polavaram Hydro Electric Project will meet its deadlines and emerge as a key driver of sustainable growth and infrastructure development in the state.
