Kurnool: Gargayapuramtank on the outskirts of Kurnool has witnessed a remarkable arrival of migratory birds from the distant region of Siberia, turning the water body into a vibrant seasonal habitat. Thousands of these birds, known for their colourful plumage and long-distance travel, have flocked to the area, creating a visually captivating scene and drawing the attention of nature lovers and visitors.

The tank, located near a developing urban forest and boating facility, has increasingly become a preferred leisure destination for city residents. Visitors, especially during holidays, are thronging the site to witness the rare congregation of these birds. While traditional birding hotspots such as Kolleru Lake, Pulicat Lake, and Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary continue to host migratory species, Gargayapuram is steadily gaining prominence. The migratory birds undertake an arduous journey of thousands of kilometres every year to escape the harsh winter conditions and food scarcity in Siberia. Traversing regions such as Afghanistan, Mongolia, and Tibet, and crossing the formidable Himalayas, they reach India in search of a warmer climate and adequate food, including fish, insects, and plant shoots.

Experts attribute their increasing presence in Kurnool to favourable climatic conditions and a relatively safe ecosystem. Arriving around January, these birds use the Gargayapuram tank as a breeding site, where they lay eggs and nurture their young. Both male and female birds actively participate in protecting the nests and feeding the chicks. After completing their breeding cycle, the birds begin their return journey to Siberia around August, accompanied by their offspring. The growing influx of these migratory species has enhanced the ecological and tourism significance of the region.
