Born in 1933 into the renowned Mangeshkar family, Asha began her musical journey at a young age and went on to become one of the most prolific singers in Indian cinema. Starting with her first recording in the 1940s, she rose to prominence in the 1950s and became a favourite among top composers.
Initially recognised for cabaret-style and dance numbers, Asha later showcased her versatility by excelling in various genres, including ghazals. Her performances in films like Umrao Jaan and Ijaazat earned her National Awards, while she also won multiple Filmfare Awards throughout her career.
Her personal life saw its share of challenges. She married Ganpatrao Bhosle at a young age but later separated. In 1980, she married composer Rahul Dev Barman, with whom she shared both a personal and professional bond until his passing in 1994.
In her later years, Asha Bhosle remained a respected figure in the music industry, often reflecting on the evolution of music while continuing to inspire generations. Her demise signifies the closing of a golden chapter in Indian playback singing.
