Los Angeles: Veteran British actor John Nolan, best known for his roles in Batman Begins and the television series Person of Interest, has passed away at the age of 87. His death was reported on April 11, though the cause has not been disclosed.

Nolan, who enjoyed a long and diverse career across theatre, film and television, was also the uncle of acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan and screenwriter Jonathan Nolan. He frequently collaborated with both nephews, appearing in several of Christopher Nolan’s films, including The Dark Knight Rises and Dunkirk.

In Batman Begins, Nolan portrayed Wayne Enterprises board member Douglas Fredericks, a role he later reprised in The Dark Knight Rises. He also gained recognition for his portrayal of the enigmatic antagonist John Greer in Person of Interest, a series created by Jonathan Nolan.

Paying tribute, Christopher Nolan remembered his uncle as a major influence in his life and career. “My uncle John was the first artist I knew… I miss him terribly,” he said, highlighting their close personal and professional bond.

Born in London in 1938, Nolan began his career on stage, performing with prestigious groups such as the Royal Shakespeare Company before transitioning into television and film. Over the decades, he built a reputation as a versatile character actor with a strong presence across genres.

He is survived by his wife, actress Kim Hartman, their children and grandchildren.
