Imtiaz Ali’s border encounter with Pakistani fan trends online

Amritsar: An emotional cross-border interaction between a Pakistani fan and filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has captured the internet's attention, highlighting the unifying power of art and cinema ahead of the release of Main Vaapas Aaunga.

The heartwarming incident took place at the Attari-Wagah Border during the special event ‘Jai Ho – A Musical Salute to the Bravehearts’, where Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman performed live in tribute to the Border Security Force (BSF). The event was organised as part of the promotional campaign for Imtiaz Ali’s upcoming film Main Vaapas Aaunga.

According to reports, a fan from Lahore travelled nearly 20 kilometres to the border after learning that Imtiaz Ali and A.R. Rahman would be attending the event. The fan later shared a heartfelt account on social media, describing how the encounter transcended borders and celebrated the shared cultural and artistic heritage of people on both sides.

The admirer recalled calling out to Imtiaz Ali from across the border and expressing how the filmmaker’s work had inspired an entire generation of storytellers in Pakistan. Ali reportedly responded warmly and thanked him for his kind words. The exchange concluded with the fan saying, “Main Vaapas Aaunga” (I will return), a remark that resonated deeply with those present and echoed the title and themes of the filmmaker’s latest project.

The touching moment quickly went viral on social media, with users praising the interaction as a reminder that cinema, music and storytelling have the power to bridge divides and foster human connection.

Main Vaapas Aaunga is set against the backdrop of the 1947 Partition and explores themes of love, longing, memory and belonging. Directed by Imtiaz Ali, the film stars Diljit Dosanjh, Naseeruddin Shah, Sharvari and Vedang Raina in key roles, with music composed by A.R. Rahman and lyrics by Irshad Kamil.

The film is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on June 12, 2026.
