Three stays, one soul: Sri Lanka in slow motion
Across Sri Lanka, three destinations unfold a journey of contrast and connection: a tranquil heritage estate, a cultural riverside retreat, and a vibrant urban escape. Moving slowly through Rambukkana, Kandy, and Colombo, this travel story captures the island’s rhythms, textures, and timeless spirit in a deeply personal way and insight.
Rambukkana: Where Time Slows Down
My Sri Lankan journey began in the quiet countryside of Rambukkana, where the drive from Bandaranaike International Airport felt less like transit and more like an immersion into nature. Smooth roads cut through thick foliage, coconut groves and endless stretches of green that seemed almost unreal in their richness.
Set within a sprawling estate, Jetwing Wahawa Walauwa welcomed me with the grace of a bygone era. The restored 19th-century mansion carried an old-world charm, its architecture echoing stories of its past life as a stately residence. There was a stillness here that felt deeply restorative, broken only by the rustle of palms and birdsong.
Exploring the region added layers to this tranquil stay. At Dambadeniya Temple, I walked through history, imagining a time when it safeguarded the sacred Tooth Relic. Equally fascinating was Deliwala Kota Wehera, where a modest museum displays archaeological finds, including a delicate golden casket reminiscent of the Sanchi Stupa.
A visit to Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage was a complete contrast—lively, immersive, and unforgettable. Watching elephants amble into the river for their daily bath was both joyous and humbling.
Kandy: A Cultural Awakening
The journey to Kandy unfolded like poetry—misty hills, winding roads and tea estates rolling into the horizon. Away from the city’s bustle, Jetwing Kandy Gallery offered a sense of seclusion, its riverside setting creating an almost meditative calm.
As dusk settled, the property came alive with rhythm and colour. The distant beat of drums led me to a Kandyan dance performance—an explosion of movement, costume and tradition that felt both intimate and powerful.
The following morning began with a visit to the revered Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic.
Set beside the tranquil Kandy Lake, the temple radiated a quiet spiritual energy. Being there at dawn, before the crowds, made the experience especially moving.
Colombo: Between Sky and Street
My final stop brought me to Colombo, where the pace shifted to something more dynamic. In the upscale neighbourhood of Colombo 7, Jetwing Colombo Seven stood as a contemporary counterpoint to my earlier stays. Its location made exploration effortless. Within minutes, Ifound myself at the stately National Museum of Colombo, and later at the serene Gangaramaya Temple, where diverse architectural influences blend seamlessly.
Yet the most striking perspective came from above—both literally and emotionally. The rooftop infinity pool became my favourite vantage point, especially at sunset, when the city softened into hues of gold and grey.
A visit to the Colombo Lotus Tower offered an even broader view. From its observation deck, Colombo stretched endlessly—its skyline, coastline and ocean merging into a single sweeping panorama. For a taste of the city’s contemporary pulse, I wandered through Odel and the Racecourse Shopping Complex, where colonial architecture meets modern retail.
Each stop on this journey felt like a different chapter— Rambukkana’s quiet introspection, Kandy’s cultural depth, and Colombo’s vibrant modernity. Together, they formed a portrait of Sri Lanka that was as layered as it was unforgettable.
