The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT Hyderabad) has appointed Dr. G. Satheesh Reddy, former Chairman of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), as its Honorary Advisor (Research and Development). The move is aimed at strengthening the institute’s research ecosystem and advancing innovation aligned with national priorities.

Dr. Reddy is a prominent figure in India’s defence and aerospace sectors, having previously served as Secretary, Department of Defence R&D, and Scientific Adviser to the Raksha Mantri. He is currently associated with multiple national and academic bodies, contributing to policy, research, and higher education. In his new role, Dr. Reddy will guide the development of multidisciplinary research programmes and support collaborations between academia, industry, and government.

His involvement is expected to enhance translational research and encourage innovation-driven projects within the institute. Welcoming the appointment, IIT Hyderabad Director Prof. B. S. Murty highlighted that Dr. Reddy’s experience would help expand mission-oriented research and strengthen industry partnerships. His mentorship is also expected to benefit students and faculty by encouraging work in emerging and strategic sectors. The institute aims to leverage his expertise in areas such as defence technologies, aerospace systems, and advanced manufacturing.

The appointment is also expected to support ongoing collaborations with national agencies and contribute to capacity-building initiatives.

Dr. Reddy expressed his interest in working closely with the institute’s research community and supporting efforts that promote technological development. The development marks another step in IIT Hyderabad’s focus on building a research-driven academic environment and contributing to innovation in critical sectors.
