Bidar: Emphasising the role of media in nation-building, Karnataka Assembly Speaker U T Khader said journalists must always uphold truth and integrity in their profession.

He was speaking at the valedictory of the 40th State Conference organised by the Karnataka Working Journalists Association, Bidar district unit, held at a convention hall in Bidar on April 12.

Khader noted that journalism is a symbol of social responsibility and plays a crucial role in shaping society and the nation. “The pen of a journalist must always stand for truth. Media, journalists and citizens together form the strength of the country,” he said. He urged journalists to develop writing that inspires society and goes beyond mere criticism or praise. Describing politics and journalism as the “two eyes of society,” he said both must function effectively for a healthy democracy. He stressed that journalists should observe society closely with an open mind to excel in the profession. Forest, Ecology and Environment Minister and district in-charge Eshwar Khandre said Bidar represents communal harmony and hosting the conference in the district was a matter of pride. He expressed concern over the decline of investigative journalism and called for introspection within the media fraternity. He also assured that the government is committed to the protection of journalists.

Leader of Opposition R Ashoka observed that journalism is undergoing a transformation and cautioned against any attempt to control the media. “Courage and independence are essential to uphold the dignity of the profession,” he said.

Senior leader Bandep P Khaseempur highlighted the growing challenges in journalism and urged the government to extend support to media professionals. He also called for remembering the contributions of pioneers who built the journalists’ association.

MLAs Dr Shailendra Beldale, Dr Siddu Patil, and Marutirao Mule, State Information Commissioner B. Venkata Singh, Association State President Shivanand Tagadur, General Secretary G C Lokesh, and several other dignitaries were present. District president Anand Devappa welcomed the gathering.
