Raising awareness for functional neurological disorder

Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) is a complex and often misunderstood condition that affects how the brain and body communicate. Individuals with FND may experience symptoms such as seizures, movement difficulties, weakness, or sensory changes, even though no structural damage to the nervous system is visible. Despite being a genuine and potentially disabling condition, FND is frequently misdiagnosed or dismissed, leading to delays in treatment and added emotional distress for patients.
Raising awareness about FND is essential to improving understanding, reducing stigma, and ensuring timely care. Many people mistakenly believe the symptoms are “all in the mind,” but research shows that FND is rooted in real neurological dysfunction. Early diagnosis and a multidisciplinary approach—including neurology, psychology, and physiotherapy—can significantly improve outcomes. Sharing patient experiences and encouraging open conversations can help break down misconceptions surrounding the disorder. By increasing awareness, we can foster a more supportive environment for those living with FND and ensure they receive the recognition and care they deserve.
