Ganesh Visarjan vidhi: How the farewell is performed
Ganesh Visarjan marks the end of the period during which Lord Ganesha is worshipped at home or in a community pandal. While the 10-day celebration concludes with Anant Chaturdashi, many families choose an earlier Visarjan according to their customs and traditions.
Ganesh visarjan dates
For devotees observing different durations, the commonly followed Visarjan days in 2026 are:
• 1.5-day Visarjan: Tuesday, September 15
• 3rd-day Visarjan: Wednesday, September 16
• 5th-day Visarjan: Friday, September 18
• 7th-day Visarjan: Sunday, September 20
• 10th-day Visarjan — Anant Chaturdashi: Friday, September 25
The exact day may vary according to family tradition, local customs and the date chosen when bringing Bappa home.
How visarjan is performed
On the chosen day, devotees begin with a final puja and aarti. Family members gather around the idol, offer flowers, durva, fruits and naivedya, and seek Lord Ganesha’s blessings. The concluding worship, often known as Uttar Puja, may then be performed according to the family’s tradition.
The idol is prepared for its final journey with flowers and simple decorations. Families or community groups may carry Bappa to the designated immersion site while singing devotional songs and chanting “Ganpati Bappa Morya, Pudhchya Varshi Lavkar Ya”, expressing the hope of welcoming him again the following year.
At the immersion site, devotees offer a final prayer before gently immersing the idol. For home celebrations, immersion in a suitable container, artificial pond or designated tank can be considered. Community idols should be taken to authorised immersion facilities, in accordance with local arrangements.
The Visarjan symbolises farewell and the return of the idol to the elements. Devotees then seek Ganesha's blessings and look forward to welcoming Bappa again.
