Respect for elders is non-negotiable
This is with reference to the article “Treating Elders with Respect Is the Ultimate Salutation’. The article has touched upon a raw nerve by reminding us that respect for elders, once the quiet cornerstone of our civilisation, is gradually yielding to the pressures of an increasingly hurried world. Never before have we possessed so many means of communication, yet seldom have we found so little time to converse with those whose lives shaped our own. Respect for elders was never merely a matter of etiquette; it was an acknowledgment that every generation stands upon the shoulders of another.
Our timeless injunction, “Matru Devo Bhava, Pitru Devo Bhava, Guru Devo Bhava,” was not a ceremonial phrase but a profound moral philosophy that placed gratitude at the heart of human conduct. Yet, in a world intoxicated by speed, ambition and digital distractions, experience often struggles to command the reverence it once enjoyed.
The tragedy of our age is not a lack of affection but a scarcity of presence. History offers illuminating examples. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam repeatedly acknowledged his science teacher, Sivasubramania Iyer, for broadening his horizons and inspiring him to dream beyond limitations. Nelson Mandela often recalled how the elders of his village taught him the art of listening before speaking, a lesson that later shaped his statesmanship. In Japan, Respect for the Aged Day is observed nationwide, while Confucian philosophy in China regards filial devotion as the foundation of social harmony. The irony of modern life is striking.
We painstakingly preserve ancient manuscripts, restore heritage monuments and celebrate historical legacies, yet often overlook the living archives seated quietly within our homes. Every wrinkle on an elder’s face is a chapter of resilience, sacrifice and perseverance. Respect for elders is not measured by touching feet on festive occasions alone; it is reflected in attentive listening, patient companionship and compassionate care. A society may be judged by its technological achievements, but its true greatness is revealed by the dignity it accords to those whose sacrifices made that progress possible.

Reality check for Mamata Banerjee
The house of Trinamool is divided in no time after its poll debacle. The grassroots (the literal meaning of Trinamool) could stand bravely against the cyclonic winds of state elections ,but got bogged down by the internal unrest.
The formidable non-BJP regional party cannot be seen as strong as before hereafter on the national political stage. It’s the leader Mamata’s own making. If a group of more than two thirds of its legislative party has deserted her and claimed the party banner, one cannot blame others than the leader herself for the developments. In the contemporary politics, the regional parties are facing headwinds, being vulnerable to machinations. The leaders with authoritarian style should think twice before affecting organisational changes.

Buildings or death traps?
Delhi’s Hotel Flourish deaths are shocking. Deaths are not accidental, but were preventable as these are the result of complete collapse of the accountability system which is ruled by greed and negligence. All are compromised, the municipal officers, elected councillors, the police who let these illegal buildings crop up sans any safety protocols.
If the hotel owners had even a shred of conscience, if the officials responsible for inspections and enforcement had done their jobs honestly instead of looking the other way, there would not have been such a catastrophe where even an entire family and some foreigners among others have been wiped out. Unfortunately, intense commercial activity in urban centres has been causing rot and the vicious scenario is unending. If we as a nation are so helpless that we can’t ask those responsible to ensure all safety protocols in such buildings ?
