Amaravati: The state government has sanctioned Rs 20 lakh for conducting special theatre training camps under the ‘Gurajada Theatre Training’ programme during 2026-27, cinematography minister Kandula Durgesh said on Monday.

The minister said in a statement that the initiative was aimed at strengthening the theatre sector in the state, developing artistic and technical skills and encouraging greater participation of youth in theatre activities. The government has issued orders (GO RT No. 1933) for conducting the training camps.

The camps will be organised under a public-private partnership model in collaboration with eligible theatre groups, theatre councils, recognised theatre organisations, universities and other suitable partner institutions, he said.

Durgesh said the programme would provide specialised training in children’s theatre, youth theatre, playwriting and direction, makeup and various technical aspects of theatre. Details regarding faculty honorariums and other expenditure had been specified in the government order, he added.

The minister said the Andhra Pradesh Film Development Corporation (FDC) had already announced the Nandi Film and TV Awards, Nandi Theatre Festivals and Kandukuri Awards.

He said the Nandi Film Awards would be presented in Amaravati or Vijayawada in December, while the Nandi TV Awards would be presented in Tirupati. The Nandi Theatre Festivals and Kandukuri Awards presentation would be held in January, he added.

Durgesh said the training camps would help artists prepare to participate in theatre festivals to high professional standards. He said the programmes were being named after legendary Telugu playwright and poet Gurajada Venkata Apparao to commemorate his 164th birth anniversary and honour his contribution to Telugu theatre.

The minister directed FDC officials to take all necessary preparatory measures for the successful conduct of the camps.

He said it was the government’s responsibility to preserve traditional and performing arts that were facing the threat of decline. “However much technology and the digital era may change, the significance of live performing arts will remain permanent,” he said.
