CSR Push for Rural Education: MRPL Sanctions Crores for Govt Schools in Coastal Karnataka

Mangaluru: In a significant boost to rural education, Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) has sanctioned substantial funds under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme for the development of government schools in coastal Karnataka.
The move follows sustained efforts by MLC Dr. Manjunath Bhandary, who had raised concerns over inadequate infrastructure in rural schools despite increasing student enrolment.
In Udupi district, funds have been allocated for multiple institutions, including ₹95 lakh each for classroom construction at Muniyalu Karnataka Public School and Government Model Higher Primary School in Hebri. Development works at Government Pre-University College, Hebri, will receive ₹78.80 lakh. Additionally, government high schools at Bajagoli, Siddapur and Basrur will each receive ₹78.80 lakh, taking the total allocation to over ₹2.36 crore for these three institutions.
In Dakshina Kannada district, ₹92 lakh has been earmarked for an auditorium at Government PU College, Benjanapadavu, along with ₹40 lakh for additional classrooms. Another ₹80 lakh has been approved for a new building at Government Model Higher Primary School, Vamadapadavu.
Bhandary, who personally visited several schools, had highlighted the need for better infrastructure to support students from rural and economically weaker backgrounds.
The initiative has drawn appreciation, with stakeholders noting that industry participation in public education can significantly improve learning conditions and outcomes in rural areas.
