Mangaluru: An overall financial support and insurance package of approximately Rs. 1.20 crore for the family of a worker killed in a fire at its facility was announced on Thursday by Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL).

Manish Karkada, the deceased, lost his life on September 30 in the Coker Hydrotreater (CHT) Unit of the refinery. Grief over the incident was expressed by the management of the ONGC subsidiary, which extended condolences to the bereaved family and said it stands in solidarity with them during this difficult time.

The company, in an official statement issued on Thursday by Rudolf V J Noronha, Chief General Manager of Corporate Branding and Corporate Communication of MRPL, said: “While no financial assistance can compensate for the loss of a precious life, MRPL has decided to extend financial support of Rs. 90 lakh to the family of the deceased.”

Eligibility for the family, alongside the ex-gratia sum, covers benefits of approximately Rs. 10 lakh under the Group Term Life Insurance scheme and Rs. 20 lakh under the Workmen Compensation Policy. The refinery added that these together take cumulative financial assistance to around Rs. 1.20 crore.

MRPL also addressed wider welfare measures for contract workers, stating that a proposal on mediclaim insurance coverage for the secondary workforce is currently under discussion.
