Belagavi: In a shocking case of domestic abuse, police in Belagavi have arrested a man for allegedly confining his wife and two children inside their home and subjecting them to physical and mental torture. The swift intervention by the city’s Akka squad ensured the safe rescue of the victims.

According to police sources, the incident came to light on March 3 when the women’s police station received a distress call from Delhi. The caller informed officials that the woman was being held captive by her husband in a locked bedroom at their residence in the Tilakwadi area and was facing severe abuse. Acting promptly on the information, CPI D.P. Nimbalkar alerted the Akka squad to take immediate action.

Responding without delay, the Akka squad team rushed to the location. Upon reaching the house, officers forced open the door and rescued the woman and her two children. The victims were found in distress and were immediately provided medical assistance and emotional support.

Based on the complaint filed by the woman, a case has been registered against the accused at the women’s police station. The husband has been taken into custody and is currently being interrogated by the police.

In a commendable humanitarian gesture, the police ensured the long-term safety of the victims by arranging their travel back to the woman’s parental home in Delhi. Taking into account her wishes and safety concerns, authorities facilitated their journey by flight, demonstrating a strong sense of duty and sensitivity.

The rescue operation was carried out by PSI A. Rukmini along with officers and staff including R.I. Kadalagi, Swapna Gondhali, Roopashree Yamakanamaradi, and Siddappa Sangli, whose coordinated effort led to the successful intervention.

City Police Commissioner Bhushan Borase praised the Akka squad for their timely action. He stated that the very purpose of establishing the squad was to respond swiftly to women in distress and ensure their safety. He confirmed that the rescued woman and her children have now been safely sent to Delhi, away from immediate danger.

The Akka squad, which began operations in Belagavi on February 17, has been actively working to address issues related to women’s safety. So far, the team has visited over 70 locations including schools, colleges, bus stands, railway stations, women’s hostels, and other crowded areas to spread awareness.

In addition, the squad has conducted 91 awareness programmes focusing on critical issues such as women’s legal rights, child marriage prevention, child labour laws, the POCSO Act, good touch and bad touch awareness, cybercrime, and the harmful effects of drug abuse. They have also educated women and students about emergency helplines available during crises.

This incident once again highlights the importance of timely intervention and dedicated units like the Akka squad in tackling domestic violence cases. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to ensuring the safety and protection of women and children, urging the public to report such incidents without hesitation.
