Bengaluru: Amida growing shortage of auto LPG in Karnataka, Indian Oil Corporation Limited has announced an increase in supply across the state in an effort to ease the crisis affecting auto drivers. The shortage has significantly impacted the livelihoods of auto-rickshaw drivers, many of whom are struggling due to inconsistent fuel availability. Currently, there are 72 auto LPG dispensing stations operating in the state, of which 55 are managed by Indian Oil.

In Bengaluru, LPG is priced at ₹89.52 per litre at government-run pumps, while private outlets charge between ₹99 and ₹105 per litre. This price difference has led to long queues at government pumps, with drivers preferring them over costlier private stations.

Given that nearly 70 percent of autos in the state are equipped with dual-fuel systems, Indian Oil has advised drivers to temporarily switch to petrol to manage the shortage.

Meanwhile, several auto driver associations, including the Adarsha Auto and Taxi Drivers’ Association, have expressed anger over what they describe as government inaction. Association president M. Manjunath said drivers are facing severe financial stress, struggling to pay EMIs, house rent, and school fees due to reduced earnings and fuel scarcity.

The associations have demanded that at least six litres of LPG per auto be ensured daily. Bengaluru alone requires around 300 tonnes of LPG per day, and drivers have urged the government to address the issue immediately. They have also decided to submit a memorandum to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, seeking support for conversion to CNG as a long-term solution.
