Karnataka Congress Faces Internal Turmoil As High Command Cracks Down On Leaders

Congress high command pressures Siddaramaiah to act against key leaders over alleged anti-party activities, exposing internal rifts ahead of Karnataka elections.

The Congress unit in Karnataka is dealing with a growing internal crisis after allegations surfaced that a senior minister and two MLCs indirectly supported a rival candidate during the recent Davangere South bypoll. The party’s central leadership has instructed Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to take strict action against B Z Zameer Ahmed Khan, K Abdul Jabbar, and Naseer Ahmed for alleged anti-party conduct, even though all three are considered close to him.
As part of the fallout, Jabbar has already stepped down from his role as chairman of the Minority Welfare Board, while Naseer Ahmed has been asked to resign as the Chief Minister’s political secretary. Sources indicate that Khan could also be removed from the state cabinet in an effort to contain the damage.
Reports from intelligence agencies and party observers suggested that the leaders may have quietly backed SDPI candidate Afsar Kodlipete, possibly even contributing to his campaign. The issue appears to have stemmed from disagreements over candidate selection, as the trio had pushed for a minority candidate, Sadik Pailwan, while the party ultimately fielded Samarth Mallikarjun.
The bypoll was held following the death of senior leader Shamanur Shivashankarappa, with vote counting scheduled for May 4. The controversy has added to ongoing tensions within the state Congress, particularly the rivalry between Siddaramaiah and his deputy DK Shivakumar, raising concerns about unity as the state heads toward upcoming elections.
