992 booked for drunken driving in weekend checks

HyderabadL Continuing its drunken driving checks, the traffic police booked over 992 offenders across the tri-commissionerate limits. The Hyderabad Commissionerate registered 466 cases, while the Cyberabad and Malkajgiri Commissionerates reported 240 and 286 cases, respectively. As many as 32 offenders were sentenced to imprisonment.
The traffic police stepped up enforcement and conducted a large-scale of drunk and drive tests in their respective Commissionerates. In Hyderabad limits, the police caught 466 offenders between April 10 and 11. Of the total offenders, 404 were two-wheelers, 23 were three-wheelers, and 39 were cars and other vehicles.
Meanwhile, the Cyberabad police nabbed a total of 240 individuals during the weekend. Police nabbed 193 two-wheelers, 9 three-wheelers, 38 four-wheeler drivers.
In the last week (April 6 to 11), a total 86 DD cases were disposed of in the courts, in which all two persons got jail, 84 were penalised of various amounts. In Malkajgiri, police nabbed 286 offenders, including 251 two-wheeler drivers, nine three-wheeler drivers, and 26 four-wheeler drivers. According to Malkajgiri police, a total 218 DD cases were disposed of in the courts, in which 186 persons were penalized and 30 persons were sentenced to jail and two individuals got social service. The police urged the citizens that if anybody indulges in driving under the influence of alcohol and causes accidents resulting in fatalities, such persons will be arrested and charged under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), which carries a maximum sentence of up to 10 years in jail along with a fine, said a police officer.
