Legal hurdles cloud Khairatabad, Huzurabad bypolls
In Short
- EC to await court verdict
- Vijaya Reddy challenges Danam’s election
- Court ruling could cancel by-poll
- BJP alleges Congress fears defeat
- Huzurabad by-poll remains speculative

BRS and Congress
Hyderabad: Discussions are on over two by-elections in Telangana, with Khairatabad and Huzurabad at issue. However, legal and procedural hurdles have raised questions over whether one by-poll will actually take place.
The Khairatabad seat was expected to go to a by-election after the Assembly Secretary’s gazette notification confirmed the vacancy following the disqualification of BRS MLA Danam Nagender. Huzurabad remains speculative, as BRS MLA Padi Kaushik Reddy could face action on Ethics Committee recommendations to Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar.
Khairatabad has now become uncertain following a petition filed by Khairatabad corporator P Vijaya Reddy challenging Nagender’s election. The petition was filed after Nagender was disqualified following petitions submitted by Kaushik Reddy and BJP MLA Alleti Maheshwar Reddy.
The Election Commission informed the court that it would keep the Khairatabad by-election issue in abeyance and await the outcome of Vijaya Reddy’s petition. The EC indicated that the by-election should not be conducted until the court delivers its verdict.
The BJP alleged that Congress approached the court fearing defeat.
The situation in Huzurabad is equally uncertain. The Assembly Ethics Committee has not taken a final decision on the complaint against Kaushik Reddy over his issue with MLA Kadiyam Srihari. The committee directed Kaushik Reddy to submit his response by October 7, 2026, and agreed to provide raw video of Srihari’s remarks to BRS members.
It is scheduled to meet on October 8 and sought more time to submit its report. BRS MLAs Vemula Prashanth Reddy and T Padmarao, members of the committee, argued in favour of Kaushik Reddy. Padmarao said that if the committee recommended action and the Speaker acted against him, leading to a by-election, the BRS would approach the court.
A court case could delay the Huzurabad by-election. Thus, Khairatabad depends on the court’s decision, while a Huzurabad by-poll appears premature.
A political analyst said the Congress legal team would need to handle the matter if the BRS approaches the court. The analyst said the BRS and BJP brought the Khairatabad vacancy to this stage through legal efforts.
If the court rules in favour of Vijaya Reddy, there would be no Khairatabad by-poll. If the Speaker only warns Kaushik Reddy, there would be no Huzurabad by-election. Even if the Speaker acts against him, a BRS court challenge could delay the process. For now, the prospect of two by-elections remains uncertain, while the possibility of one depends on legal and Assembly proceedings.
