Naini coal to power up Yadadri plant
Hyderabad: With the electricity demand increased under El Nino impact, the Telangana government has begun exercise to generate thermal power in full installed capacity at all thermal projects in the state. First, coal supply to Yadadri Thermal Power Project is being streamlined to generate more power from this month.
The TGGENCO was making arrangements to supply 16,000 metric tonnes of coal from the Naini block of Odisha to the Yadadri project every day. In all, 2400 MW of thermal power would be made available if uninterrupted coal is supplied to the project which was commissioned last year.
The total installed capacity of the thermal projects was 7,128 MW. Almost 50 per cent of the projects were not generating power due to coal shortage in recent times.
Despite the state government pleading with the ministry of Coal and Coal India to supply high grade coal from Mahanadi coalfields, the ministry did not respond till the date. In early 2026, the average daily thermal power generation touched a peak of 90.23 MU. Now, the government targets to generate 140 MU of thermal power to meet the growing power demand in the crisis time.
An official team led by TGGENCO Chairman and Managing Director S Harish visited the Naini coal fields and reviewed the challenges to supply coal to the Yadadri plant regularly.
Logistical problems and availability of the railway wagons would be resolved for regular supply of coal to the thermal project. The initiative to transport 16,000 tonnes of quality coal daily will provide a significant boost to the plant's existing logistics operations.
The enhanced coal supply to the Yadadri Thermal station will play a pivotal role in boosting the plant's power generation, Harish said, emphasising the critical need for high-quality coal sourced from the Naini block for the YTPS ultra-supercritical station.
He stated that this collaboration between TGGENCO and SCCL would not only bolster energy security and mitigate supply deficits but also facilitate the state's policy of providing uninterrupted power to domestic, agricultural, and industrial consumers by enhancing generation at the Yadadri power plant.
