14-year-old boy suffers brain damage after surgery

Suryapet: A 14-year-old boy, who was admitted to a private hospital in Suryapet for treatment of lumps in his throat, reportedly suffered a deterioration in his condition following surgery, triggering concern in the town. The boy’s family alleged that the doctors and staff briefly left the operating area after informing them that the oxygen supply had run out during the surgery. They claimed that the boy’s condition subsequently became critical.
According to the family, doctors at another hospital later informed them that the boy had suffered severe brain damage. Tarak (14), son of Maidem Upender and Usha of Chandrannakunta in Ward No. 25 of Suryapet Municipality, had reportedly been suffering from lumps in his throat for some time.
About a week ago, they took him to a private ear, nose and throat (ENT) hospital near the new bus stand in Suryapet.
After conducting medical tests, the doctors advised surgery. The family said they agreed to the procedure after paying around Rs 80,000 towards the treatment.
The boy’s relatives alleged that during the surgery, the doctor and staff came out for a short while, stating that the oxygen supply had run out. They expressed suspicion that the boy may not have received adequate medical attention during that period.
As the boy’s condition reportedly deteriorated, he was shifted to another hospital. Doctors there examined him and reportedly informed the family that he had suffered severe brain damage, with the relatives claiming that they were told that around 80 per cent of his brain had been affected.
Demanding an explanation for the deterioration in the boy’s condition, his family members and relatives staged a protest outside the hospital. They reportedly entered an argument with the hospital management.
The family has demanded a comprehensive inquiry into the incident, including what exactly happened during the surgery, whether there was any interruption in the oxygen supply, how long the interruption lasted, the boy’s medical condition at the time, and whether there was any medical negligence during the treatment.
