M&U Minister Dr Ponguru Narayana addressing the media in Nellore on Sunday
Nellore: While asserting the government’s firm commitment to conducting local body elections, Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister Dr Ponguru Narayana clarified that they will be held only after the Supreme Court delivers its verdict on the BC reservations issue.
Speaking to media persons after participating in various developmental works in Nellore on Sunday, he stated that the election process is fully prepared and will commence immediately following the judgment.
Defending the coalition government’s decision to provide reservations to Backward Classes, the Minister pointed out that the opposition YSRCP approached the High Court out of fear of defeat. He expressed hope that the Supreme Court’s verdict would favor the state government.
Minister Narayana disclosed that the 16th Finance Commission has sanctioned around Rs 12,000 crore, warning that if local body elections are not held, the state will lose access to these vital funds.
He alleged that the YSRCP is deliberately attempting to block these financial allocations by creating hurdles. Recalling past governance, he noted that the previous YSRCP regime’s failure to conduct elections for 123 municipalities resulted in the 15th Finance Commission withholding funds.
Responding to queries on delimitation, Narayana clarified that ward boundaries and reservations come strictly under the purview of the State Election Commission (SEC).
