Ongole: Water Resources Minister Nimmala Rama Naidu inaugurated the renovated Karumanchi Major Canal at Chimakurthy in Prakasam district on Monday. Collector P Raja Babu, Santhanuthalapadu MLA BN Vijay Kumar and Ongole MLA Damachala Janardhana Rao were present at the programme.
Speaking at the event, the minister said that the canal plays a key role in providing irrigation water to over 16000 acres and drinking water to 16 villages in the downstream area. He said a 500-metre concrete bund was constructed using Rs 2.63 crore in DMF funds and Rs 25 lakh contributed by local businessman Nalluri Venkata Seshaiah under the P-4 programme, in response to requests from farmers and local representatives.
Rama Naidu said that the coalition government has spent Rs 1308 crore on water resources management in the two years since coming to power. He said bringing Handri-Neeva waters to Rayalaseema, Krishna water to the Veligonda Project, and Godavari floodwaters to North Andhra are achievements of the government led by Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu. He reiterated that the Polavaram Project will be completed by next year.
Collector Raja Babu said that the works were completed in less than five months and that steps will be taken to complete other pending works in the area. He informed that over 3000 works were completed in the district under the Jaladhara programme.
Janardhana Rao said that the state government gives high priority to drinking and irrigation water needs. He also called upon people to attend the Ongole Municipality 150th anniversary celebrations on September 30.
District Library Authority Chairperson Suchitra, Nalluri Venkata Seshaiya, AMC Chairman Mannam Prasad, local leaders, officials and a large number of farmers attended the programme.
