Rajamahendravaram: BJP MLC Somu Veerraju accused Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi of making politically motivated allegations against the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, stating that SIR was aimed at preventing irregularities and bogus voting rather than deleting genuine votes.

Addressing a media conference at the BJP office here on Monday, Veerraju said allegations over changes in Form 6 were baseless. He said different forms had been consolidated for the convenience of voters and that the change was intended to simplify the process. He said there were no differences within the Election Commission and that differences of opinion among constitutional authorities were natural.

According to him, the commissioners discussed issues among themselves and took decisions by consensus. He also said the Supreme Court had upheld the Election Commission’s decision. Veerraju said preparation of electoral rolls was not a process conducted behind closed doors and that the booth-level machinery of political parties also had a role in the exercise. He alleged that the Congress had failed to appoint booth-level agents in several places and was making allegations without adequate ground-level involvement.

He said the phrase ‘vote chori’ was being repeatedly used by the Congress as a political campaign, while maintaining that the SIR exercise was intended to verify electoral rolls and remove irregularities. The Election Commission’s draft SIR roll for Andhra Pradesh had identified deceased, shifted and duplicate entries during the revision process. Veerraju also criticised the opposition over its comments on the Election Commission and alleged that attempts were being made to create doubts about constitutional institutions.

He also criticised Gen Z for questioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that Modi and Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu were the real Gen Z as they had continued to work hard for nearly 18 hours a day.

He alleged that foreign funding was behind some of the recent Gen Z-related protests and claimed that the objective was to create instability and obstruct development. BJP leaders Pikkin Nagendra, B Dattu, Relangi Sridevi, Adabala Rama Krishna, Lakshmi Santoshi and others were present.
