Vijayawada: Dalit Sthree Sakthi (DSS) national convener Jhansi Geddam has stressed the need for effective implementation of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act to ensure justice, compensation and rehabilitation for victims.

Addressing a Legal Clinic organised by DSS at Hotel Swarna Palace here on Monday, Jhansi Geddam said the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act was a special legislation intended to provide comprehensive protection to victims of atrocities.

Around 30 women, who had suffered atrocities, including murder, rape, cheating in the name of love and POCSO-related offences, participated in the Legal Clinic and narrated their difficulties in accessing justice.

Jhansi Geddam said compensation and rehabilitation provided under the law were the rights of victims and not charity. Delays in investigation, prosecution and trial were causing immense hardship to victims, as they were often subjected to threats and pressure from the accused to withdraw or compromise cases.

Director of Prosecutions Byra Koteswara Rao, SC Corporation Director Maridayya, psychologists Rama Devi and Praveena, Women and Child Welfare Department representative Ruksana, Anupama of Bhoomika and Chitti Babu of DBS were among those on the jury.
