Visakhapatnam: The NSS unit of MVGR College of Engineering organised an awareness programme on disaster management here on Friday.

Hosted in association with the 5th Battalion APSP State Disaster Response Force on the college campus on Friday, the programme aimed to educate students on disaster preparedness, response strategies and the importance of community involvement in handling emergency situations.

Inspector S Chandra Sekhar, who participated as a resource person, addressed students and emphasised the need for disaster management awareness in today’s world. He elaborated on the roles and responsibilities of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and highlighted the importance of youth participation in acquiring disaster management skills to save lives during emergencies. A 25-member disaster response team conducted live demonstrations showcasing various equipment and techniques used during disasters. Students received hands-on training in rescue operations and were educated on safety measures considered during thunderstorms, lightning, fire accidents, earthquakes and train accidents. A special focus was laid on early warning systems, CPR training and basic physical examination techniques. The team also presented real-life incidents to create awareness about the severity and unpredictability of disasters. An exhibition was organised at the campus.
