Visakhapatnam: The power distribution department plays a crucial role in attracting investments and generating employment opportunities by ensuring uninterrupted power supply to industries, said Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar.

Speaking at a programme held at the APEPDCL corporate office here on Monday, he said the coalition government stands by the families of employees who had died or become incapacitated while in service. The Minister handed over compassionate appointment orders to 43 eligible candidates.

Ravi Kumar stated that compassionate appointments pending for the past three years were expedited so that eligible families would not have to make repeated visits to government offices. So far, more than 445 compassionate appointments were given across the three power distribution companies as well as the power generation and transmission companies, he informed.

The Minister said the government was taking special measures to address the shortage of human resources in the power sector. Future manpower requirements were also assessed in advance given the growing demand for electricity. The distribution network will be strengthened alongside increasing generation capacity.

The absorption of energy assistants working in village secretariats added around 6,500 to 7,000 personnel to the power sector across the state. However, more field-level staff is required to provide better services to consumers, he added.

Ravi Kumar informed that after filling 629 assistant engineer posts, steps would be taken to fill vacant lineman posts with the approval of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.

He mentioned that electricity tariffs had not been increased since the coalition government came to power. The Chief Minister’s objective is to strengthen the power system without increasing electricity charges during the next five years, the minister said.

Speaking on the occasion, APEPDCL CMD Immadi Prudhvi Tej informed that around 30,000 employees are working under APEPDCL jurisdiction. The compassionate appointments were provided to support the families of employees who had lost their lives or suffered serious health setbacks while performing their duties, the CMD said.

TDP state president Palla Srinivasa Rao mentioned that Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu is prioritizing compassionate appointments to support families facing distress. Steps are being taken to further strengthen the power network, including through underground cabling, he added.

Visakhapatnam MP M.Sribharat stated that increasing electricity consumption during daytime could help reduce pressure on the power system. He stated that steps are being taken to further enhance the state’s power capacity.

MLAs Velagapudi Ramakrishna Babu and P Vishnu Kumar Raju, APEPDCL directors TV Suryap Prakash, T Vanaja and S Haribabu, CGMs, SEs and other senior department officials attended the programme.
