Iran hardens its position in negotiations with the United States, citing past breaches and deep mistrust, even as talks continue in Islamabad over key issues like the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran has adopted a firm stance during ongoing negotiations with the United States, emphasising deep mistrust rooted in past diplomatic disputes, even as talks continue in Islamabad.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said the country has not forgotten previous breaches of commitments by the US and remains cautious in its approach. He stressed that diplomacy, for Iran, is closely tied to protecting national interests and sovereignty.
Describing the negotiations as lengthy and intense, Baqaei noted that discussions have involved continuous exchanges of messages and draft proposals, facilitated with mediation efforts from Pakistan. He added that Iranian negotiators are fully committed to safeguarding the country’s rights.
Key issues under discussion include the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, Iran’s nuclear programme, sanctions relief, war reparations, and broader regional conflicts. These topics remain central to the ongoing deadlock between the two sides.
Iran has indicated that progress in the talks will depend on what it calls “seriousness and good faith” from the US, along with a willingness to avoid excessive demands and recognise Iran’s legitimate interests.
Despite continued disagreements, both sides have agreed to extend the negotiations for another day following Pakistan’s proposal. Reports suggest that while some limited progress has been made, major differences persist, particularly over strategic and geopolitical concerns.
The outcome of these talks remains uncertain, with the situation still fragile as both nations attempt to navigate complex issues amid ongoing regional tensions.
