Another Setback For TMC As Sushmita Dev Resigns From Rajya Sabha

The party is in deep crisis as Trinamool Congress MP Sushmita Dev has stepped down from the Rajya Sabha and a party-wide rebellion is threatening to rock the leftist outfit following its defeat in the Assembly polls in West Bengal.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) again got a big political wallop on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, when party president Sushmita Dev resigned from her Rajya Sabha berth. Her resignation is the second of the top brass to have left the upper house of Parliament this week after veteran leader Sukhendu Sekhar Ray resigned.

A strong woman from the Congress and later joining TMC, Ms Dev has officially resigned from her party by meeting with Rajya Sabha Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan to hand over her official resignation letter. She asked for her resignation to be accepted immediately in her letter and thanked deputy chairman and the secretariat of the Rajya Sabha for their support while she was in office.

There are growing rumors that Ms. Dev will be breaking off all ties with the TMC for good and going all out for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) following her interaction with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Senior leaders of the TMC have been deploring the ongoing exodus of their members, saying Kalyan Banerjee was “angry” at the “disheartening trend” of the lawmakers leaving the party due to their alleged active support for the BJP.

The prominent resignations coincide with a turbulent time for the Trinamool Congress, which is facing discontent within its ranks following its loss of control in the West Bengal Assembly elections. Many elected officials are now looking to get away from the “central leadership.” The in-fighting has already resulted in the creation of another faction within the State Assembly, where 80 MLAs of the party have joined hands with Ritabrata Banerjee to make themselves the official opposition.
