Car breaches Assembly security, three detained

New Delhi: A startling breach of security unfolded at the Delhi Legislative Assembly on Monday when a speeding vehicle forced its way into the heavily guarded complex, raising fresh doubts about the robustness of security arrangements in the national capital. The incident comes close on the heels of a recent bomb threat to the Assembly, which had already placed authorities on heightened alert.
Police later detained three people, including the driver, and seized the vehicle from north Delhi.
The incident took place in the afternoon when a white Tata Sierra with a Uttar Pradesh registration abruptly headed towards Gate No. 2 of the Assembly. Witnesses said the car rammed into the iron gate with force, breaking it open and entering the premises. The sudden crash created panic inside the complex, with security personnel caught off guard as they attempted to respond. Before any effective action could be taken, the vehicle had already advanced up to the porch area outside the Speaker’s office. A bouquet was reportedly seen inside the car, adding an unusual detail to the incident .
The ease with which the vehicle navigated through a zone considered to be under three-tier security protection has prompted serious questions about possible gaps in surveillance and response systems. Typically, such sensitive locations are equipped with mechanisms like hydraulic bollards and tyre killers designed to stop unauthorized vehicle entry, but it remains unclear whether these were functional at the time.
Following the breach, Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta has called for a detailed report from the Home Department and senior Delhi Police officials.
