Berhampur: The serene and myth-soaked heights of Mahendragiri stood draped in grief on Monday, as the lifeless body of a missing tourist was recovered, turning a day of spiritual exploration into a tale of profound sorrow. The tragedy is believed to have been caused by a lightning strike during a sudden and violent Kalbaisakhi storm.

The deceased, Binod Jena of Olatpur village under Niali block in Cuttack district, had arrived in Paralakhemundi with three friends, seeking a brief escape into the lap of nature and divinity. After sharing a meal at a relative’s home, the group embarked on a pilgrimage-like journey to the sacred hills of Mahendragiri.

Their path traced the footsteps of legend—through the ancient shrines of Kunti Temple and Yudhishthir Temple, and onward to the mystic Arjuna Cave. But as they approached the revered Bhima Temple, the calm skies turned ominous. In a matter of moments, nature unleashed its untamed fury. A fierce Kalbaisakhi storm, roaring with thunder, fierce winds, and sheets of rain, descended upon the hills, scattering the group in panic. While three of the friends found shelter within the stone embrace of Bhima Temple, Binod was tragically separated, vanishing into the storm’s chaos.

As the tempest subsided, hope flickered in anxious hearts. A desperate search ensued, joined by vigilant forest personnel from nearby watchtowers and resorts. Yet, as dusk fell, the hills offered no answer—only silence and growing despair.

With the first light of dawn, the search resumed. But fate had already written its cruel end. In a heart-wrenching discovery, Binod Jena’s lifeless body was found near Bhima Temple, bringing a sorrowful closure to the relentless search.

Police from Garabandh station have registered a case and begun an investigation. Meanwhile, the winds that sweep across Mahendragiri today carry not just the whispers of legends, but the haunting echo of a life lost—reminding all of nature’s overwhelming might and the fragile thread of human existence.
