‘Game Changer’: Pralhad Joshi Backs Electric Stove Amid LPG Supply Concerns

  • Amid LPG disruptions linked to Strait of Hormuz tensions, Pralhad Joshi promotes electric stoves as a potential alternative powered by solar energy.
  • Amid ongoing concerns over LPG supply disruptions, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi has advocated for a shift towards electricity-based cooking solutions, calling a newly demonstrated electric stove a potential “game changer.”

The minister said he recently witnessed a demonstration of an imported stove that uses electricity to produce flame-like burners, closely resembling traditional LPG cooking. Impressed by the innovation, he urged Indian manufacturers to adopt and scale the technology domestically.
Joshi also highlighted the potential of integrating such stoves with the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, which promotes solar power generation at the household level. According to him, this combination could significantly reduce India’s dependence on LPG.
The push comes at a time when India’s energy vulnerability has been exposed due to global geopolitical tensions, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz—a crucial corridor for oil and gas shipments. A large portion of India’s crude oil, natural gas, and LPG imports passes through this route.
Recent disruptions linked to tensions involving the United States and Iran led to supply bottlenecks, forcing India to temporarily curtail LPG supplies to commercial establishments. Supplies have since been partially restored to about 70% of normal levels after alternative arrangements were made.
Shipping constraints added to the strain, with several vessels carrying LPG, LNG, and crude oil getting stranded in the Gulf region during the crisis.
However, a temporary ceasefire between the United States and Iran has brought some relief. The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz has eased supply concerns and contributed to a dip in global crude oil prices.
Officials say India now expects smoother energy flows, but the situation has underscored the need for alternative, locally sustainable energy solutions—placing innovations like electric stoves in sharper focus.
