Sam Altman apologises after attack, admits personal mistakes, and says public fears about AI are justified amid growing societal concerns.

Sam Altman has found himself at the centre of a disturbing incident after a Molotov cocktail was thrown at his residence, prompting both concern and reflection from the tech leader. The attack, carried out by a 20-year-old suspect, set part of the exterior gate on fire before the individual fled the scene. Authorities later arrested the suspect roughly an hour afterward near the headquarters of OpenAI, where he was allegedly making further threats to ignite the building.

Police have not yet revealed the identity of the attacker or a clear motive behind the act. An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed the incident and expressed gratitude to law enforcement for their swift response in ensuring the safety of employees and the surrounding area.

In the aftermath, Altman addressed the situation publicly, combining his reaction to the attack with a broader reflection on recent criticism he has faced. His response also referenced an investigative report by a famous publication, which portrayed him as “conflict-averse” and accused him of manipulation and deceptive behaviour. The article was based on interviews with individuals associated with Altman and his company.

Taking to his blog, Altman shared a personal photo of his husband and child, writing, “in the hopes that it might dissuade the next person from throwing a Molotov cocktail at our house, no matter what they think about me.” He described the report as “incendiary” and admitted that he had underestimated the impact words and narratives can have.

Altman did not shy away from acknowledging his own shortcomings. He admitted that his tendency to avoid conflict has, at times, created challenges for both himself and OpenAI. Reflecting on past disagreements, particularly those involving the company’s previous board, he conceded that he did not always handle situations well.

“We knew going into this how huge the stakes of AI were, and that the personal disagreements between well-meaning people I cared about would be amplified greatly. But it’s another thing to live through these bitter conflicts and often to have to arbitrate them, and the costs have been serious. I am sorry to people I’ve hurt and wish I had learned more faster,” Altman wrote.

Beyond the immediate incident, Altman also addressed broader concerns about artificial intelligence. He acknowledged that public fear surrounding AI is not misplaced. According to him, society is undergoing one of the most profound transformations in history, driven by rapid advancements in the technology.

He emphasised that ensuring AI systems behave safely is only part of the challenge. Preparing society through thoughtful policies and stronger institutions is equally important in managing the risks that come with such transformative change.

This is not the first time OpenAI has faced a security scare. In November, its San Francisco offices were placed under lockdown after an individual reportedly threatened violence against multiple company locations.

The recent attack and Altman’s candid response highlight the growing tension surrounding powerful technologies and the individuals leading their development. While the investigation continues, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the intense emotions and high stakes tied to the future of AI.
