AITUC threatens DEO office siege over mid-day meal workers’ demands

AITUC stages a dharna in Nandyal demanding the cancellation of the Central Kitchen system, ₹15,000 monthly wage, and retirement benefits for mid-day meal workers.
Nandyal: The AITUC has demanded immediate scrapping of the Central Kitchen system under the mid-day meal scheme and a minimum monthly wage of Rs.15,000 for mid-day meal workers.
AITUC district general secretary P. Sunkayya also sought enhancement of mess charges in view of rising prices, besides gratuity and retirement benefits for the workers.
The AITUC staged a dharna in front of the District Education Officer’s (DEO) office here on Monday as part of the State-wide agitation by the Mid-Day Meal Workers Union. Addressing the protesters, Sunkaiah warned that the workers would lay siege to the DEO office if their long-pending demands were not resolved.
He urged the government to withdraw the Central Kitchen system and ensure better working conditions and social security for the workers.
Later, the protesters submitted a memorandum to Choudeswari, Assistant Director of the Mid-Day Meal Scheme, at the DEO office. CPI Nandyal town secretary Prasad, AIYF district secretary Nagaramudu, AITUC town president D Srinivasulu and secretary Dhanunjay, besides several mid-day meal workers, participated in the protest.
