At Art Connect in Jubilee Hills, the exhibition ‘Medhyaa’ brings together the distinct yet complementary practices of artists Rahul Jain and Gunjan Arora. Rooted in the philosophy of reuse and transformation, the show reimagines discarded materials—textiles and metals—as evocative works of art that blur the boundaries between craft, sculpture, and painting.

Gunjan Arora’s journey into this medium began on the factory floor. As a textile manufacturer, he often found himself observing heaps of leftover threads—cotton, linen, silk—considered waste in the production cycle. What others overlooked, he saw as potential. Through an intensive, hands-on process, Arora weaves together metallic threads and yarn into dense, layered compositions. From afar, these works appear almost painted or glued, but a closer look reveals the meticulous weaving that binds each strand into a cohesive fabric. The result is tactile, almost sculptural surfaces that carry both fragility and strength, echoing the quiet resilience of handmade processes. Rahul Jain’s works move in a different yet equally compelling direction. His sculptures capture the rhythm and energy of life, often drawing inspiration from the continuous, fluid motion of rivers. Using materials like stainless steel and hand-tempered brass, Jain creates forms that feel both dynamic and meditative. His brass pieces, finished in antique satin textures, double as functional objects—some resembling table lamps that cast intriguing patterns of light. Meanwhile, his stainless steel vases challenge perception, at times appearing like everyday objects such as shopping bags, only to reveal their crafted permanence upon closer inspection.

What binds both artists is a shared engagement with India’s cultural and philosophical heritage. Their works are not merely aesthetic explorations but thoughtful reflections on continuity, transformation, and sustainability. The titles and conceptual underpinnings of the pieces suggest a deep engagement with traditional ideas, reinterpreted through contemporary materials and forms.

‘Medhyaa’ stands as a testament to how discarded materials can be reimagined into objects of meaning and beauty—where waste becomes narrative, and process becomes poetry.
