Hyderabad: Traffic congestion along one of Hyderabad’s busiest western corridors could see major relief with the GHMC finalising a 4.3-km, six-lane bidirectional steel elevated corridor at a sanctioned cost of Rs 1,090 crore. With the success of the one-way traffic system around the KBR Park the state government changed its entire project of 14 flyovers to just one flyover of 4.3 kilometres.

According to GHMC, the project will be implemented in two packages under the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) mode.

Package 1, estimated at Rs 580 crore, will cover the stretch from Jubilee Hills Check Post Junction to Mugdha Junction. Package 2, costing Rs 510 crore, will extend from Mugdha Junction to Muffakham Jah College and include a dedicated ramp connecting to Banjara Hills Road No. 1.

On Monday, GHMC commissioner RV Karnan, along with Khairtabad Zonal Commissioner B Santosh and senior engineering officials, inspected the proposed alignment and ongoing foundation excavation and junction improvement works on the corridor. The project is intended to provide signal-free movement across five major junctions and address persistent congestion around the KBR Park–NFCL Junction stretch.

The project marks a shift from earlier plans involving separate underpasses and grade separators. RV Karnan said, “The earlier proposals were reassessed following the implementation of a one-way traffic system around KBR Park and delays arising from litigation related to tree-felling permissions.”

Under the revised plan, the government has opted for a continuous elevated corridor, with steel structures chosen to speed up construction and minimise disruption to traffic during execution, the commissioner added.

The six-lane corridor is expected to enable uninterrupted traffic movement across five major junctions, reduce travel time and vehicle queues, and lower fuel consumption. “The elevated structure will have zero footprints in the eco-sensitive zone around KBR Park, thereby limiting its impact on existing green cover,” said officials.

Officials said the revised alignment would also reduce the need for extensive ground-level modifications and land acquisition. As per GHMC’s estimates, the unified design could result in Rs 800 crore in land acquisition savings and Rs 400 crore in construction cost savings, amounting to an estimated Rs 1,200 crore saving to the public exchequer compared with the earlier multi-component proposal.
