Green India Challenge sees success in Sundarbans

The Green India Challenge team reported encouraging growth of 20,000 geo-tagged mangrove saplings planted in the Sundarbans earlier this year. The successful plantation drive highlights the impact of scientific conservation practices, community participation, and long-term efforts to restore one of the world's most important mangrove ecosystems.
Hyderabad: In a remarkable demonstration of citizen-led environmental action, the Green India Challenge team on Wednesday revisited their mangrove plantation site in the Sundarbans. This is where 20,000 geo-tagged mangrove saplings were originally planted on February 17, 2026, to mark the birthday of BRS President and former Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao.
The extensive site visit revealed an inspiring success story. Thousands of these young mangrove saplings have established themselves successfully across the coastal terrain, with many growing up to three feet in height and displaying healthy, vigorous growth. A clear comparison between photographs taken on the initial day of planting and present-day images highlights the remarkable ecological progress achieved within just a few months.
This success showcases the effectiveness of scientific plantation practices, regular monitoring, and active community participation. Founded by former MP Santosh Kumar Joginapally, the challenge continues to inspire diverse citizens to restore the world’s largest mangrove ecosystem.
