Asifabad: Farmers gear up for kharif season

Ahead of the Southwest monsoon, Adivasi farmers in Kumuram Bheem Asifabad district perform traditional 'Vijja Mohathur' rituals to seek blessings for the upcoming Kharif cotton season.
Asifabad: With the Southwest monsoon set to reach the State in a few days, farmers in the district are preparing for Kharif crops.
Adivasis, in particular, perform special prayers to their clan deities before commencing agricultural activities. Adivasi temples are abuzz with ‘Vijja Mohathur’ rituals—a tradition where the auspicious time for starting farm work is determined. In the mandals of Kerameri, Jainoor, Narnoor, Sirpur (U), Lingapur, Tiriyani, Gadiguda, and Asifabad, Adivasis are offering special prayers and placing seeds before their clan deities, seeking nature’s cooperation for a bountiful harvest.
The ‘Vijja Mohata’ rituals performed during the agricultural season reflect Adivasi culture and traditions.
In a district heavily dependent on cotton cultivation, farmers have already completed land preparation and procured the necessary seeds and fertilizers. Alongside cotton, crops such as red gram (pigeon pea), maize, green gram, and sorghum are also cultivated to some extent. Despite not realising expected profits during the last Kharif season, farmers are once again leaning towards cotton cultivation this season.
