Gadwal District Collector urges public to download the ‘Damini – Lightning Alert’ app. Get real-time, GPS-based warnings for lightning strikes, understand the colour-coded severity alerts, and stay safe during the monsoon season.

Gadwal: District Collector Rizwan Basha Shaik stated in a press release on Tuesday that the public should make use of the ‘Damini – Lightning Alert’ app, which provides advance warnings about lightning hazards.

The District Collector urged everyone to download and use the app developed by the Union Ministry of Earth Sciences to stay alert against lightning-related dangers during the monsoon season. He noted that the app is highly useful in preventing loss of life by using GPS technology to detect the likelihood of lightning strikes and issue timely warnings. He mentioned that the app is available for free on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store under the name “Damini: Lightning Alert.”

Explaining details of the app, he said, “It monitors lightning activity within a radius of approximately 20 to 40 km around the user’s location and issues necessary alerts.” He added that a colour-coded alert system has been incorporated into the app to indicate the severity of the lightning risk. It was explained that the app issues advance warnings using colour codes: red if lightning is likely to strike in your area within approximately 7 minutes; yellow for a 10-to-15-minute window; and blue for an 18-to-25-minute window. “People can heed these alerts to move to safe locations and protect themselves from the dangers of lightning strikes,” he said. Emphasizing the app’s role in saving lives, the appeal was made for every family to install the ‘Damini’ app on their mobile phones and for widespread awareness to be created through villages, schools, colleges, farmers’ platforms, and public institutions.
