Well-known filmmaker Bharathiraja, fondly known as “Iyakkunar Imayam,” passed away at 84. He leaves behind a remarkable cinematic legacy.

On June 10, 2026, Popular Tamil film director Bharathiraja passed away in Chennai. He was one of the highly praised filmmaker dies at 84. The final rites after Bharathiraja demise will be carried out with full state honours at his farmhouse in Theni district.

On Thursday morning, June 11, 2026, Bharathiraja's body will be taken to his farmhouse at Kaatrodu near Vathalagundu. After completing the public homage, the Bharathiraja last rites and burial will be carried out at 3 p.m.

A towering traits in the film industry, fondly called as Iyakkunar Imayam, Mr. Bharathiraja is a winner of six National Film Awards, four South Filmfare Awards, six Tamil Nadu State Film Awards and a Nandi Award. More considerably, he was instrumental in bringing different new actors in Tamil cinema.

In a typical move, he rechristened several actors with names starting with the letter “R”, gifting the industry with talented artistes. The top names are Radikaa, Revathi, Radha, Ranjitha and Rekha. Napoleon, Pandian, Chandrasekar, Karthik, and Janakaraj are the top actors who won the heart of the industry.

On Bharathiraja death news, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed grief. He called him the end of life of an expert producer, director, and screen writer.

Mr. Modi said in a post on X, “The passing of Thiru Bharathiraja Ji is very saddening. He was a towering figure of the cinema world whose works transformed Tamil cinema. Particularly noteworthy was his portrayal of rural life. My thoughts are with his family and admirers in this hour of grief. Om Shanti”.
