Auto driver killed after compound wall collapses during heavy rain in Bengaluru

Bengaluru: A 56-year-old auto-rickshaw driver lost his life after a compound wall collapsed on his vehicle during heavy rain in Bengaluru on Friday evening, highlighting the dangers posed by the city's crumbling infrastructure during the monsoon season.
The deceased has been identified as Shivaborayya, a resident of Gangondanahalli. The tragic incident occurred near the Vijayanagar Club premises when a portion of the compound wall suddenly gave way and fell on a parked auto-rickshaw.
According to police, Shivaborayya was inside or near the vehicle when the wall collapsed due to the impact of incessant rainfall. He suffered severe injuries and died on the spot. The body was later shifted to Victoria Hospital for postmortem examination.
The incident comes just days after a similar rain-related tragedy in Bengaluru in which seven people lost their lives after a compound wall at Bowring Hospital collapsed during heavy showers.
Thursday’s rain wreaked havoc across several parts of the city, leading to waterlogging, traffic congestion and the flooding of multiple underpasses. Several trees and branches were also uprooted due to strong winds and continuous rainfall.
Police personnel from the Vijayanagar Police Station rushed to the spot and conducted an inspection. A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway.
Meanwhile, Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) Commissioner Maheshwar Rao visited several waterlogged underpasses, including the KR Circle underpass, to assess the situation. He instructed civic officials to ensure the quick removal of rainwater and improve drainage systems across the city.
Rao also appealed to residents to dispose of waste responsibly, stating that clogged drains and accumulated garbage often obstruct the smooth flow of rainwater and contribute to urban flooding.
The latest incident has once again raised concerns over public safety and the condition of ageing structures across Bengaluru as the city continues to experience heavy pre-monsoon showers.
