TG govt declares 320 mandals drought-hit
The Telangana government on Tuesday declared 320 mandals as drought-affected in 18 districts of the state. However, a comprehensive report on the drought conditions will be prepared by the end of October, and the government will announce a contingency package to combat severe rainfall shortages.
The number of drought-affected mandals will be increased after the state Revenue (Disaster Manage-ment) submits a report on the conditions prevailing in the villages. The preliminary assessments indicat-ed severe drought conditions across 320 mandals where drinking water crisis will be intensified in Sep-tember.
State Planning, Revenue, Groundwater, Agriculture, Panchayat Raj, and Rural Water Supply depart-ments will prepare action plans in accordance with the local conditions in every mandal.
At a high-level meeting on Tuesday, Chief Secretary Sanjay Jaju instructed the authorities to consider 12 standard parameters prescribed by the union government during the preparation of the drought report. The report is crucial to seek the central government’s assistance for drought relief in the current financial year. Rainfall recorded during the Southwest Monsoon season (June to September) was the first big fac-tor to declare the mandals as drought hit.
In light of the state government's decision to hold an all-party meeting regarding the impact of El Nino, the Chief Secretary also instructed officials to prepare a comprehensive report containing all the neces-sary details for the meeting.
An official delegation would also meet the central ministers to seek a drought relief package soon. Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy will hold a meeting with the Revenue offi-cials next week on drought conditions and relief measures.
