NEET Paper Leak Fallout: Dharmendra Pradhan Steps Down as Education Minister, Says ‘I Never Shied Away From Responsibility’

New Delhi: In a major political development triggered by the nationwide controversy over the alleged NEET-UG paper leak, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned on Saturday, accepting responsibility amid sustained protests, political pressure, and public criticism. His resignation, submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, comes as the government continues to face intense scrutiny over the handling of one of the country's biggest examination scandals.

The controversy surrounding the NEET-UG examination, which determines admissions to medical colleges across India, sparked weeks of protests by students and opposition parties. The issue raised serious concerns over the credibility of the country's examination system and the future of millions of medical aspirants. Pradhan's resignation is being seen as a significant move towards ensuring accountability in the wake of the controversy.

The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), which had been demanding the minister's resignation since the paper leak surfaced, maintained its stand throughout the protests. Significantly, the resignation came just before the second round of talks between the government and CJP over the issue.

Soon after stepping down, Pradhan released his resignation letter on social media platform X, where he reflected on his lifelong association with the education sector. He wrote that he had devoted more than four decades to education as a student, teacher, and reformer, adding that he has always believed a strong, inclusive, and future-oriented education system is the foundation of a strong nation.

Expressing gratitude to the country's youth, Pradhan said he deeply respected their aspirations, emotions, and legitimate expectations. He stated that fulfilling the dreams of young Indians has always been a moral responsibility for everyone in public life. He also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for giving him the opportunity to serve the country under his leadership.

In his statement, Pradhan addressed the NEET-UG controversy directly, acknowledging that irregularities were detected in the examination conducted on May 3, 2026. He said the Central Government acted without delay by referring the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), cancelling the examination, and announcing a fresh schedule for the re-test. He also highlighted the government's decision to shift the NEET examination to the Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode from next year in an effort to strengthen transparency, security, and the integrity of the examination process.

Pradhan said the government's immediate priority after the cancellation was to ensure that the re-examination for more than 20 lakh students was conducted smoothly. According to him, the process was carried out through a coordinated "whole-of-government approach," with active participation from the Central Government, state governments, district administrations, and multiple agencies. He also acknowledged the cooperation of students, parents, and guardians in successfully conducting the re-NEET examination on June 21, 2026.

Taking personal responsibility for the crisis, Pradhan said he had accepted accountability from the very first day and had never attempted to distance himself from the situation. He maintained that his commitment was to ensure that no deserving student's future was destroyed by examination mafias and that every candidate received a fair opportunity.

Referring to the NEET-UG results announced on July 16, Pradhan said the outcome had been satisfactory, pointing out that many meritorious students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds had secured admission opportunities despite the disruption caused by the controversy.

Although Pradhan has stepped down, the political debate surrounding the NEET paper leak is far from over. With the CBI investigation still in progress and demands for wider reforms in the examination system continuing to grow, the government is expected to face renewed pressure to introduce stronger safeguards against future examination irregularities and restore public confidence in India's competitive entrance tests.
