Apple's Future Smart Glasses and Headsets May Turn into Health Trackers

Apple's plans for wearable tech appear to be growing well beyond the iPhone and Apple Watch. As per Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, the Tech giant is looking at ways to fold health and fitness monitoring into its upcoming smart glasses and AR headsets, building on the wellness features that already support products like the Apple Watch. The very first generation of smart glasses is expected to stay focused on basic experiences, but later versions may carry more advanced tracking abilities.

Sensors Could Bring Fitness Tracking to Future Smart Glasses

Gurman's reporting indicates that Apple wants to equip future smart glasses and headsets with several onboard sensors designed to detect body movement and other fitness-related signals. The goal, it seems, is to gather this kind of health data without making the devices bulkier or less comfortable to wear throughout the day.

Interestingly, Apple has explored similar ideas before. The report states that the company had initially considered bringing health and fitness tracking features to the Apple Vision Pro headset. It was also said to be developing a dedicated version of Apple Fitness+ for the headset, allowing users to wear it during workouts while analysing body movements in real time. However, those plans were reportedly dropped because of "technological hurdles" and the overall weight of the headset.

A Longer-Term Vision for Wearables

Instead of packing these health features into its debut smart glasses right away, Apple seems to be playing the long game. Bloomberg suggests the company is currently studying how to squeeze health-sensing hardware into a far more compact glasses design before rolling it out widely.

Adding weight to this theory, Apple's Vision Products Group is said to be recruiting a senior product design lead - a hire that could point toward a broader wearables strategy taking shape behind the scenes. Should these ideas come to fruition, future smart glasses could eventually complement the Apple Watch and AirPods, both of which already handle tasks like health tracking and hearing support.

This latest report follows an earlier leak claiming Apple has pushed back the launch of its first smart glasses to sometime in the first half of 2027, with WWDC 2027 now seen as the likely unveiling point - giving developers extra runway to build and refine apps ahead of release.
