Heavy rains continue to batter Telangana, disrupting normal life as red alerts are issued for several districts amid forecasts of more downpours and rising river levels.
Normal life activity in the state was affected due to incessant rains triggered by the low-pressure system that formed over the Bay of Bengal. The deluge that occurred over the state on Tuesday night till Wednesday night led to stream overflows, tanks' breaches, and waterlogging, which hindered traffic and agricultural activities. A tribal woman died after plunging into the Ballivagu stream in Nirmal district while bathing, and a man went missing after crossing the Jampannavagu stream in Mulugu district following the annual visit to the Medaram Vanadevathas (forest gods).
The overflowing Isukavagu stream in Wajedu mandal of Mulugu district has caused water to spread on to the National Highway 163. The tourist spot Bogatha Falls near Cheekupalli were submerged under water as the stream that feeds the falls had overflowed, and consequently, no tourists were allowed to visit the falls. In addition to stream flooding, Nirmal district's major road between Son and Dharmaram was washed away, and Kadem stream overflowed in Pembi mandal.
The Godavari river's water level at Bhadrachalam in Bhadradri Kothagudem district has risen steadily with the water flowing downstream and is likely to cross the 30 feet (9.14 m) mark by Thursday. Many houses suffered damage as a result of the downpours.
In Telangana, out of the 621 mandals, 587 mandals received rains on Tuesday and 30 mandals recorded heavy to very heavy rains (10-20 cm).
The Hyderabad Metrological Centre has forecast heavy to very heavy rains across the state on Thursday and Friday as a low-pressure area has developed over the Bay of Bengal. Balaji, a private weather forecaster, said that very heavy rains (20-40 cm) are expected to occur in the various districts. A 'Orange Alert' has been issued for nine districts as well. However, moderate to occasional rains are likely to occur in the other districts.
