Mahanadu signals power shift in TDP

Amaravati: The Telugu Desam Party’s Mahanadu this year was not merely an annual organisational conclave - it unmistakably emerged as a political stage for the formal elevation of Nara Lokesh as the future leader of the TDP.

For the first time, Lokesh led the party’s flagship event almost entirely on his own after recently assuming charge as TDP national working president, while Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu largely confined himself to governance and policy messaging. The political signals from Mahanadu were difficult to miss: the TDP leadership transition has effectively begun.

From key organisational decisions to political messaging and future strategy, Lokesh dominated the two-day conclave. His announcement proposing 33 per cent seats for women in the 2029 elections became one of the defining political resolutions of Mahanadu, further reinforcing his emergence as the party’s principal decision-maker.

“It has been just over a month since I became national working president. Now I have the responsibility of strengthening the party in Telangana and Andaman too,” Lokesh declared, while calling for rebuilding the TDP “from the village level.”

Inside the party, the message was even clearer. Senior leaders, many of whom once hesitated to openly endorse Lokesh’s leadership, publicly projected him as Chandrababu’s political successor. In one of the most striking endorsements, senior MLA Gorantla Butchaiah Chowdary described Chandrababu as a “saintly figure” and Lokesh as a “fierce Narasimha,” saying opposition parties would “runaway” before him.

The political symbolism at Mahanadu extended beyond speeches. The body language of senior leaders, the repeated references to Lokesh’s leadership, and the way the entire event revolved around him reflected what party insiders described as a “carefully calibrated leadership handover.”

For years, one of the biggest internal questions within the TDP was whether Lokesh could independently establish political legitimacy while Chandrababu remained an active and towering figure in Andhra Pradesh politics. Party leaders now believe that phase has passed.

The turning point, according to TDP insiders, was the Yuvagalam padayatra before the 2024 elections, during which Lokesh directly connected with cadre and youth while the party was in opposition. Since the NDA government came to power, Lokesh’s role has steadily expanded - from handling crucial portfolios like IT, HRD and Investments to leading job creation initiatives and driving investor outreach.

TDP leaders point to the government’s repeated claims of attracting Rs 23 lakh crore investments, including Google, ArcelorMittal, and Reliance, etc., as evidence of Lokesh’s growing administrative credibility. They also highlight his strengthening national-level ties with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amith Shah, senior BJP leaders, RSS circles, industrialists and corporate groups.
