RS race puts TDP's power equations to test

Amaravati: The dust from Telugu Desam Mahanadu has barely settled, but a new political contest has already begun inside the ruling NDA alliance. With nominations for the Rajya Sabha elections set to open on June 1, the corridors of power in Amaravati and the TDP headquarters have turned into the latest battleground, as leaders scramble for one of the four Upper House seats falling vacant from Andhra Pradesh.

For the Telugu Desam Party, the election is not merely about filling vacancies. It is emerging as a test of how Chief Minister N ChandrababuNaidu balances party loyalty, caste representation, regional equations and alliance management within the NDA. With the YSR Congress Party lacking the numbers to win even a single seat, all four Rajya Sabha berths are expected to go to the ruling alliance. That certainty has only intensified the competition.

Over the past few days, a stream of aspirants has been meeting Chandrababu Naidu, while others have been reaching out to TDP national working president Nara Lokesh. Senior leaders, former legislators, businessmen and community representatives are all pressing their claims before the party leadership.

The biggest question before the TDP leadership is how many seats should be retained by the party and how many should be shared with alliance partners. Political circles believe Jana Sena has emerged as the strongest contender for one berth, as the party currently lacks representation in the Rajya Sabha.

The BJP, however, remains a variable. While some TDP leaders argue that the BJP was accommodated during earlier Rajya Sabha elections, others point out that a request from the BJP's central leadership would be difficult to ignore. That leaves Naidu with a complicated puzzle involving the remaining seats.

Several names are in circulation. Sitting Rajya Sabha MP Sana Satish is widely believed to be seeking another term. The name of Kilar Rajesh, considered close to minister Nara Lokesh, is also being discussed. Senior leaders such as Varla Ramaiah, Kambhampati Ram Mohan Rao, Janga Krishnamurthy, Reddappagari Srinivas Reddy and Undavalli Sridevi have all intensified their efforts. Some of them met CM Naidu at party central office on Saturday and submitted their requests. Business and professional names, including education entrepreneur Ramakrishna and former Guntur MP Galla Jayadev, are also being mentioned in political circles.

Behind the lobbying lies a larger political calculation. The Rajya Sabha selections will signal who Chandrababu wants to reward in the post-2024 era, which social groups the party intends to strengthen, and how much space the TDP is willing to concede to its NDA partners.

With nominations just days away, the suspense is no longer about who wants a Rajya Sabha seat. The real question is whose political future Chandrababu chooses to invest in.
