‘The Odyssey’ day 1 box-office opens strongly, crosses ‘Oppenheimer’

Christopher Nolan’s ambitious attempt at an epic adaptation of Homer’s Greek classic, The Odyssey, has had a good opening in India and overseas. The film starring Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, etc., has gathered high anticipation from moviegoers.

As per Box Office India, The Odyssey minted a hefty Rs.17.4 crore nett on the day of its release. The film’s gross ran up to Rs.20.76 crore on the opening day as the English version accounted for Rs.13.75 crore and Hindi version pulled in Rs.1.90 crore. Telugu and Tamil versions added Rs.1.10 crore and Rs.65lakh respectively. The film has a higher opening day collection compared to Nolan’s previous Hollywood release, Oppenheimer, which opened to a healthy Rs.14.50 crore in India.

The film’s IMAX screenings have also seen good turnout. While the English 2D IMAX houses in Delhi were 80% full on an average with some evening shows being 82% full, Delhi recorded a better occupancy than Mumbai which had fewer IMAX shows than Delhi.

The film has registered a great opening overseas as well with Universal Pictures reporting $17.6 million from Thursday previews in North America, marking it the widest preview opening of the year. The opening weekend is likely to be around $117 million, which would make it the third-largest opening for Nolan after The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises .

While The Odyssey ‘s opening day collections might not match up to Hollywood Hindi releases like Avengers: Endgame, Avatar: The Way of Water, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Avengers: Infinity War, etc., the positive word of mouth indicates that it will have a spectacular weekend. As Nolan’s first film to be shot entirely on IMAX cameras, The Odyssey may have a long legs at the global box office.
